my friend has talked about doing this and said all that he had to do was get the cable that is attached to the odo and hooking it up to a drill, (allot simpler with the instument cluster uninstalled) but I myself have never personally done this and he did it on a mid 80's olds so you never can know for sure

for sure, pulling the cable, and putting it in a drill chuck would work. but does spinning the odo that fast cause problems? what is the rpm of the speedo cable inside its sheath? drills get very fast.
if the normal rpms of the speedo cable is very slow compared to a drill, it might cause problems. if the normal speed of the cable is similar to a drill, you will be sitting there 'drilling' for a long long time.
just thoughts.
