Any danger in hosing down the engine?

I mean, with all the sensors and stuff, would there be any harm in hosing down an LT1 specifically, or, more generically, any car engine? Also, whats the safest thing to use to make the whole compartment a little shinier?

My 96 s-10 and 84 camaro i degreased the entire motors then rinsed them off and never have any problem i mean the stuff gets some what wet in the rain any ways. Plus when we wash cars in the shop we always degrease the motors and rinse them off.
Hope this helped

I've never had any problem doing it, just make sure you get rid of all the stuff you put on it like tire/engine cleaner by thoroughly rinsing it, it usually helps out by getting rid of corrosion and stuff.

Well in order to use most engine degreasers.. On the can, it usually instructs you to apply the drgreaser, let sit, and then rinse off. So I'm assuming that it would be ok. If not, then sue the company who makes the product, for providing you with faulty instructions :evillol:

yea, the electronics will be fine as long as you let them dry. Don't try to start it up right afterward while it's all still soaking wet. And i think you're still supposed to cover the coil/distributor/optispark/whatever the hell you have, so it stays dry at all times.

And I personaly would be sure as hell not to get degreaser on the belts..... You never know how belts react to different things. I had a few drops of oil eat through a belt one time. I mean not instantly but within days/weeks.

Heh, oh yeah. And definately keep that crap away from your intake. In fact, cover that whole section up.

My ex-girlfriend had someone pressure wash her engine and she had those spark plugs that go down about 6 inches through the top of the engine................well you can see where this is going. :)

well, so long as the engine is cold, youll be fine, (barring the import problem of vertical tube spark plugs) However never NEVER hose down a hot engine. the rapid cooling can cause major damage to the block, heads, intake, and exhaust components. my brother hosed down the 350 in our 1977 oldsmobile and warped both heads so bad it basicly blew both head gaskets when we started it up. that was a fun one to fix.

Yes but, water in the distributor cap is not good. I never directly rinse off my engine, without first covering the intake and distributor (and a few other parts).

DO NOT hose down an LT1 engine, the opti spark will be trashed ($$$$$). Instead use simplegreen and rags. to rinse use one of those bottle sprayers for gardening (the kind you pump up) and keep the water away from the front of the engine where the opti and TPS are.

The 93-94 optispark was non-vented and was more inclined to build condenstation then the 95-97 which had a vented optispark. I always wash my 93 while the engine is cold and have never had a problem. I had some friends that were not so smart and tried to wash the engine while hot and ruined the optispark on a 93. New optisparks for the 93-94 run about $350. wholesale, so be careful.
