When did coilovers come out? I was having a discussion with a friend about coilovers, and he said that hey bought a set of Tein coilovers back in 1996! I didnt know coilovers were out way back then... and didnt know Tein was in business in Japan yet either. Was he BSing? When were TRUE coilovers available to the public... US and Jap?

Also... for those that say Tein is older than 9 years old because they sell coilovers for a 1996 accord. C'mon now... just because Baskin Robins sells Vanilla ice cream, doesnt mean they were in busienss in the 1800s. :D

If I remember right coilovers came to the US around 1997/1998. Cause I know I had a set at the end of 1998.
I can go look at my 1st issue of Sport Compact Car :)

It really depends what kinda of coilovers. Threaded coilovers(adjustable) are probably what you're talking about. Many stock cars have coilovers(coil springs around a shock) I've seen threaded coilovers since 98 but that's also when i really got into cars. So...pointless post

Sorry to crush one of the BS claims, Paul...
But Tein was established in 1985 in Japan manufacturing OEM shocks and aftermarket suspension equipment. They are celebrating their 20 year anniversary this year!

Both types of coilovers have been around for a long time. Sleeves first hit the market when struts became the usual suspension. I would guess at least 40-50yrs for true coilovers and 20 yrs for sleeves. Sleeves are basically like a jack bolt on a normal spring that's been used on race cars for ever.
