Add me to the list. I've spent 3 full days under the dashboard of my jetta tracing wires with nothing to show for it. I have no spark -- no strobe from my inductive timing light hooked up to spark plug wire, no fuel since my fuel pump has 0v when key is on -- I hear it turn on and then off immediately, the relay clicks on then right off like something is telling it NO, stay down!!! And when cranking all I hear is a pathetic sputter of an engine with no ingedients to work with. There's no check engine light, just no fuel or spark. There's gotta be something that sends power to the fuel pump and controls the power to the coil - I just can't find what it is. I thought it was the alarm system pullin some overtime, but it works fine. I even tried unplugging it and jumpering the red and red/blk wires, but still nothing. I've jumpered the fuel pump relay so I get fuel, but I still don't have spark. The car drove fine that afternoon; parked it, and she's playing dead. Somebody has to know something! Are there any certified vw mechanics on this site? HELP!!! The dealership can't tell me anything and I can't pay them to keep the car until something comes up.

I will take a blind jab at this problem. It could be due to a problem with the oil pressure sensor/relay circuit. Generally, the fuel pump relay will supply current to the fuel pump during cranking. Once the engine starts, the relay will continue to supply current to the fuel pump as long as there is sufficient oil pressure. This is how older cars with fuel injection performed.
This function could be controlled by the ECM instead of a relay on your car. The ECM could also be controlling power to the ignition. I no longer have the manuals for my girl friend's 96 Jetta. I do remember that the oil pressure sensor on her car failed at less than 35k. It had a very bad oil leak, but it was easy to replace. If you can get your hands on the schematics for your car, it may show if this is a possibility. I hope this can be of some use to you.

Sounds like a bad ignition switch electrical portion. Common failure.
Also can be faulty alarm control module.
