CD player and Ipod question

i recently ran an auxillary cable into the back of my Pioneer DEH-6500 so i could run my Ipod into it. I got it working but i cannot control the volume of the iPod with the deck. I can only turn it up and down by using the iPods volume control. any thoughts as to whats causing this?
