Vallejo paints

Hi,

Every time I order a batch of Tamiya Acrylics from ModelsinMotion, in the UK, they send them with a catalogue for Vallejo paints. Vallejo seem to offer a wide range of colours including a variety of varnishes, and even sell them in handy dropper bottles, ideal for squirting straight into an airbrush.

I was wondering if anyone uses these paints and in particular the varnishes, for auto modelling? I'm curious about the quality of finish and drying time.

Anyone?

BTW Modelsinmotion should be praised for their service, I only ordered the paints (15 acrylic bottles) yesterday morning and they were on my doorstep today!!

True! The important fact is that they dont sell crap and that's why i have ordered the Vallejo, now after about a month of messing with Vallejo i think the're great, except for a couple of slightly thin/"wick" paints (Italian Red for example and it seems that it is the same on some other light colors) i havn't had the slightest problem. I havn't done any varnish yet but the primer is superb!

I just bought yesterday a bottle of Vallejo primer from a LHS here in Finland. The shopkeeper told a funny story about paints, he said when the Tamiya acrylic paints came, many people said that they were crap and now when they are more difficult to get in Finland many people miss them. And then he said that the Vallejo paints are now crap but if they go away then everybody will miss them... :) That was of course very sarcastic view... I have been happy with the Tamiya paints, but they are starting to be difficult to get here. Many LHS:s are now selling the Vallejo paints instead and I find it disturbing, that the colors available in the Vallejo range are more meant for military models and figures and not so much to car modellers.

I use Vallejo satin varnish, diluter fluid and also their AB cleaner all the time - I think it is excellent.
I had a major distaster trying to do the body of my current build boxster with the metallic black but IMHO it was totally all my fault not the paint's.
In my opinion they are probably a very viable choice for interior/cabin/chasis painting but for probably not the best alternative for body painting

I use Vallejo for hand brushing. It doesn't work that well for airbrushing for me. You'll have to coat it with something to protect it, since it's technically made for figure models, it's not very tough. I do airbrush matte varnish when I want a flat coat. It dries fast and hardens pretty good overnight.

Models in Motion send me the same info each time I order from them. I've been tempted to try these paints out. But I always stick with tamiya.

Talking of Models in Motion, not happy you now have to order £50 worth of kit for free delivery.. When it was £15 I was able to order more frequent. I have to now order in advance, to try and skip post charges..
