Yet another Jetta wont start thread.

Heres the deal. We changed the clutch on my cousins 92(?) Jetta. Had some issues getting it apart, but everything went back together smoothly. Finished bolting everything up then hooked up the battery and the alarm goes off. We shut it off by putting the key in the lock and locking and unlocking it. Ok no problem right? WRONG. Try to start it and it just cranks. Checked for spark and there is none. There is no spark even coming from the coil. Checked every single fuse under the dash and none are blown.
Does the alarm going off have something to do with this? What about the fact that he has an aftermarket headunit? Would we need to throw the stock one back in to punch in the code. I am lost and want to get this thing out of here. Any advice you guys can offer would be greatly appreciated.

Something to add. When I turn the key to the on position where the digital readout for the mileage is changes to IN 02 or at least thats what it looks like. Also I noticed I dont see a CEL light anywhere.
