Voltage meter (?)

Sorry, I'm not sure what the real term for it is--I'm referring to the gauge in the dash that indicates how much of an electrical charge you're pulling... it goes from 0, to (a number I can't recall at the moment, sorry ^^;).
When I run the vehicle, the needle always stays at the highest point on the gauge... and if I recall correctly, I've never owned a vehicle that it went that high on.
Anyone know if this is normal, or if it's not, what the normal reading would be?

normally reads about 14 volts. don't know what would cause that , but if you have an advanced auto close by , they will do a charging system check for free.

could be a bad voltage regulator
