ecotec is the name for GMs new small car motor.
The 2.2 you find in older cavaliers was a pushrod 8V motor
Ecotec is a 2.2 DOHC 16V motor.

You're a Ford guy, apparently. I'd liken it to Duratec.

Obviously its more powerful, and the two motors have nothing in common.

Or you could also point out that the logo actually came from the original founder finding some wallpaper he liked in france. He tore off a piece and it had the bowtie design on it. It stuck with the cars.

Dont want to start an import vs domestic war here, but, at the current moment I would rather have my ass sitting in an import than a domestic. I mean with all of the problems that the domestic world is having and all. Look at GMC for example, they are bragging on how they have the top automotive bases around when all of their hummers from like 97 and up were recalled. Then you got ford with their vheicles randomly catching on fire, and dodge with their transmission and electrical problems. The only one that i know of not having problems....SO FAR, is chevy. Like I have said dont want to start anything here, expecialy bc I am getting a cavi my self, but just wanted to state my 2 cents and info that is just to large to ignore any more.

I may have been working in the sun all day so Im a little tired and sun burnt and bitter but ummm uhhhh that soooo had no point what so ever. :eek7:

One of the few times no one on here just outright attacked a certain car "faction" and there still has to be somthing flung back out there. Yeah yeah yeah I know you where not trying to start anything or nothing like that but still. Why even say anything at all? All that could have done and still might do is get some one to roll up on this and talk shit to you and then what could have just been your friendly two cents then turns into a few people going back and forth having a pissing contest.

Oh I know....just in case that does happen I will now make this a short episode!

Your car is slow, my car is slow, his car is slow and her car is slow.
Your car is a POS, my car is a POS, his car is a POS and her car is a POS.

Imports suck rice rice yatta yatta.

Domestics suck built by mexicants yatta yatta.

That should just about cover everything. AF I loves ya, piece Im out. :smooch:

first of all no offense but fuck you. imports are way better. well i have a domestic but im currently trying to get a s13 silvia for drifting.so my argument is if you can get a 1.3 liter motor to have over 600hp and run 10s on the 1/4 but it take a for instance a 95 camaro a big ass 350 v8 but can even hit 13s which is better the mazda motor or a peice of shit small block 350

your punk ass probably been racing these nitrous fed sticker laden 2F2F wannabe punk handas with SOHC d16s with no performance mods thinkin there the shit for to damn long. so hey dont brag about some peice of shit car that weighs 10 times more than a honda. race a real tuner.

now back to the original question

can u tell me the differences between ecotec and regluar?
im just guessing but it probably has something to do with variable valve timing since its only available in sertain models

No, people get V8's because they need power to pull trailers or whatever. The DoD referred to in the article only cuts cylinders when they arent need. Why do you need all those cylinders going while your sitting in traffic or cruising down the high way if you can get away with just 6 of them going? Another thing, if you hate bowties so god damn bad why dont you sell it?

As for Sylvia boy... cool the fuck down. Was the question this thread started for ever answered? The pre-ecotec 2.2s have an OHV or pushrod valve train. The ecotecs have DOHC. There are other differences, but to me that is the main one. I dont think it has variable valve timing.

You know, speaking of engine technology I am amazed at how BMW can get 100HP/L naturally aspirated for their M series. I would love it if my 2.2L cavalier had 223HP!

cavaliercrazy
07-06-2005, 01:08 PM
The ecotec engines run mid-high 15 second 1/4 mile times stock with a 5 speed. and they all have 140 hp stock and the whole engine is aluminum (block, head, etc.) I think fully dressed the whole engine only weighs like three hundred something lbs. It is also alot stronger than the older 2.2 liter engines found in cavalier and sunfires. GM engineers have set new world records with this new engine.

It responds wonderfully to boost. But from what I hear, a few people blew theirs up using nitrous. Not sure if it was from not being set up right or not.

If you want to know anyhting else about them just ask.

Actually as stated above the 2.2 ecotecs are base rated at 140hp and 150 torque.
