I can get some type-r pistions for about $200.00. Can i use them with out a vtec head? Or will this be a good time for LS/Vtec?

Perfect time for a new head.. that's what i used

as far as i know you can use them in a non-vtec engine and it will raise your compression to about 11:1. i looked into doing this in my ls and the local performance shop said it would cost about $1000 for the machining and the labor. decided not to do it because im boosting in a month

You don't have to do ls/vtec to use those pistons. I would go with the CTR pistons though.

Ok so there would be no prob doing this. I would be doing the work myself so i am not worried about the $1000.00 dollor thing. How much are the CTR?

CTR pistons should raise the compression to a little over 10.5:1 ......i would use the ITR since 1. you have them & 2. they have a higher CR. you need to press LS rods the to ITR pistons, not too sure what is involved, but it is above my level of difficulty (real reason... I Don't have the tools). I have been told that the results are great.

CTR would yield a higher compression ratio than ITR

whoops i was wrong, got the wrong info what would the cr be then?

the C/R would be pretty high with the CTR pistons... i think its close to 12:1 so definitely get the car tuned and use premium gas (no shit). it would be a great idea to pick up some stage 2 cams to get the most out of those pistons though. 2 cents...

Cool, I am gonna do an all motor LS. I don't want any of the probs that you can and will most likely get from eather LS/Vtec or turbo. So thanks for the info. There is a pretty good tech section in import tuner, it's kinda old but they do some crower cams, some pistons and some other bolt on's. Now they onlt got like 123whp and 122tq but i guess that's not too bad. And also that was peak power the low to mid range was up 10 to 15hp and 15,16 ptq. So I guess that's not bad. But for 1,000.00 i would think maybe that car was not up to par.

wait a minute i got my teg dynoed with intake, exhaust, header and pulleys. i pulled 130 hp and 121 tq. to the wheels. simple bolt ons gained me almost 20hp over stock. no cams or pistons.

WOW, Ok maybe that car needed a little more. It must have been beat to hell.

You're going to let shitty misconceptions prevent you from having a faster car?

I drove my turbo LS daily for 20K miles at 300 WHP before it cracked a ringland from a clogged fuel line which caused the motor to lean out. 250 WHP would be dead reliable for a very long time. And there's nothing about an LS/VTEC that makes it unreliable, other than a shithead assembling it, but a shithead can assemble an LS motor poorly and have it be an unreliable pile of trash too.

if the ls/vtec is assemble correctly it should last. granted one would use stronger rods and high copression pistons and tuned correctly with the correct ecu or stand alone. this should last...the ls/vtec is a generally new idea, and not many people are familiar with it. there are more mythes than truth. some mechanics tell me to stay away and other are unsure, yes the ls/vtec will take maore time and maybe more money, that is why less people choose to build them. And yes maybe an ls/vtec will be a little faster or as fast as a b18c5. but i would rather have an ls/vtec than a b18c5 because if built correctly it is something to be proud of.
