Convertable Link's?

Sup fella's,

I just recently purchased a 99 spyder with two minor problems one of which is the convertable top link's are bent. I called several dealers and they're asking for a $150.00 each for a cheap piece of metal that im sure is gonna bend again in the near future. My questions are, is there any way around this? Can I get some kind of aftermarket piece? or maybe try and cut down a similar type of metal and make my own link?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

This seems to be somewhat of a common thing for those links to bend... it's from the elastic piece breaking and not pulling the cross member back when putting the top down.... I just put up with reaching back when putting the top down and pushing the crossmember back enough....
When I first got my car I didn't notice it and then seen it bent...only took once to learn about it.... I just bent it back and yeah... lived with it...
You could probably have one machined out if ya know the right people...or pull one from a junk yard... as for aftermarket... never heard of any...
I was going to make a new elastic piece to pull the crossmember back like it was when new, but never got around to doing it.... In MN ya don't really get too many days to where you can put the top down so it was kinda like a --outta site--outta mind...
Good Luck man..and WELCOME TO AutomotiveForums.COM

they sell reenforced ones on ebay. It's a common thing. Mine havn't gone yet but check 4g64 front page for more info. The link is dead so you have to search ebay
I have a pair i got off there for when mine die. Much nicer then stock ones.

Man that would be great. I havent come across them on ebay. Is it something that comes by often on ebay? What is 4g64?

How much did you pay for them?

Thanks

4g64 is the engine in the spyder GS. Turbo's have a 4g63. But 4g64 is a site dedicated to just cars that use that engine. It's a good place to look even if you have the turbo cause they have some really nice stuff on there. They had a cool backwind cover that covered up the back seats. Mad expensive but very nice.

Enjoy. Let me know how the install is as I said I havn't done mine yet. But they are up for the next piece to be replaced.

The dealer should have suggested a strap kit with the control arm links. The strap kit keeps the control links from bending again. I remember it being part of a TSB somewhere.

I was told you should really have two strap kits when I contacted the dealer. Even though the TSB says one. that ebay ad backs that up thats why I went with that cause it has the extra straps built in.

I still wonder how it twists. I just don't see it. maybe it's just my top but it goes back normal and falls back down normal (so far)

If the links cost that much I would hate to know how much the strap kit with the links cost.

oh I completely understand. The ebay one comes with the equiv of a strap kit. Read the description it explains it all.
