97 Taurus, Driver Side Mirror Installation

Hi everyone, I'm new to the board. I was hoping someone could help me with a few questions. I'm trying to sell my 97 taurus (125k mi) and there are two major obstacles to me doing so, imo.
1. The driver side mirror got clipped while I had it parked on the street one day. The mirror is electric and still works. THe glass wasn't shattered, but the plastic shell was torn almost off, so I have duct tape holding the mirror up. Is it reasonable to think that I could install a new one myself? My mechanic wants to charge me $150 for parts and $150 for labor, but I know that the part is only about 75-85 bucks. Anyone know a good salvage yard in the greater DC area?
2. The service engine soon light likes to go on and off, and of course, as soon as the car got wind of my desire to sell it, it flipped the service engine light on two weeks ago. I replaced the cam shaft sensor a year and a half ago and the service engine light came on again soon after, so i'm very wary of taking this to a mechanic because I think it's an easy way for them to replace everything in my transmission bit by bit when that isn't necessary (or within my budget). Does anyone have any recommendations?

1. I'm not sure so hopefully others will chime in, but I would expect that this is something you can do yourself without too much work. You might try going to an auto parts store and look it up in the Haynes book while you're in the store.
2. You need to have your trouble codes read. You can go to AutoZone or another large parts store chain and they will have a code reader on hand. Once you find out the codes, come back and let us know what you have. (Decent odds that it's a P0401 code but I wouldn't put money on it without more info!)

The mirror is easily replaced. remove door trim and there are probably 3 bolts that hold it to door.
I agree with having the codes read. Post code numbers here and we can help you diagnose it.
