ok well im buying a new engine for my camaro and i was wondering wht the difference is between long block and short block. do long blocks just come with the engine and no manifolds or any thing that bolts on? will they both fit to replave a stock 2.8?(im taking my 2.8 and buying a brand new 2.8 and switching everything i need but its a brand new never sarted longblock 2.8 with 0 miles on it) so whats the diff between longblock and short block?

:2cents: please

Shortblock = just the crankcase assembly bottom end rotating assmebly.

longblock = almost a complete engine, minus oil pan, and intake assembly (and of course your accessories) and no exhaust manifold.

oh ok sweet the 2.8 i found was a longblock but it came with oil pan. ok well i guess im getting a new 2.8, enless theres a more powerful engine that i can bolt in without any major modifications....anyone have any ideas, if not im getting the 2.8, i only have 1200 to work with soo if you can think of something lemme know

yeah, unless you can stroke some serious deals at swap meets or whatnot, 1200 won't go far.

anything else besides replacing the stock motor, sure it can be done, depends on your ability(all around ability) and again, financing.

I may stnad corrected (almost), it bugged me, so I didd a little back pedaling and rechecked. Maybe a 700, but at the time s.b called a 4L60, asame thing, auto 4 spd.

not for an 88, the computer controlled ones didnt come out till 93 i thought. you should still have a 700R4.

[QUOTE=89IROC&RS]4l60 was computer controlled, thats the difference ;)[/QUOTE

I was of the impression that as more vehicles were being split amungst rear vs front wheel drive, the inards (gear and band application) were similar, but needed seperation in distinction hence, the 4L60 vs the 4T60 (btw have one in my daily, not cpu controlled)

am i wrong?

i dont know for sure, not a tranny guy, thats just what i thought. although i will say im almost positive that he has a 700R4 in his camaro. because the 4l60 didnt come out till later.

Yeah, I know where you were headed, but again, would be a 4L60-E (cpu ran). That's the OBD I varient controlled one.

There's a tag id on the tranny somewhere you can decode. But since 89 and I are both sunday mornin-ing the issue I'm still sticking to it.

actually now that you bring that up you may be correct about the 4l60. kinda the redesignated 700R4 and then later the computer controlled version came out, i can roll with that. still not entirely sure about what year that happened.

Think it was late '87 after the shudder problems were dealt with on the 700 and GM also wanted to mask the the trans as they were given a bad wrap on the 3-4 upshift.

Don't quote me on it, but I think it's in the ballpark, well atleast the ballpark's parking lot.

i dunno bout that boss, i have two 89 camaros both with 700R4's. i wanna say the 4l60 came out in 93, followed by the 4l60-E shortley thereafter.
