Brewery pulls label showing Hindu god

May 9, 2005 - A California man has sued the Lost Coast Brewery in Humboldt, claiming that a label on its Indica India Pale Ale offends him and Hindus worldwide.

The Costra Costa Times quoted Brij Dhir as saying the label on Indica India Pale Ale depicting a Hindu god holding a beer intimidates Hindus from practicing their religion. "How can you show a god in such a way?" he told the paper. The label shows elephant-headed Ganesh, god of wisdom and remover of obstacles, holding a beer in one of his four hands, and another in his trunk.

"I don't want to offend any Hindu people," said co-owner Barbara Groom, adding that her Hindu friends don't mind the label. "They think it's really cool."

The company will take the product off the shelves, the brewery's general manger stated in an April 26 e-mail to Dhir.

Dhir seeks at least $25,000 and his lawsuit mentions that $1 billion would be appropriate to compensate Hindus around the world. He alleges that the brewery has defamed Hindus and caused emotional distress. Even though Lost Coast is willing to change the label, Dhir said he wants a jury to rule that the owners should pay damages for the two years of using the image.

Also named as defendants are Safeway, which carries the product, the state Department of Fair Employment and Housing and the state Attorney General's Office. Dhir alleges it has failed to respond to his requests for action against the brewery.

"It's a hate crime," Dhir told the newspaper.

-------------------------------------------

It's not even the fact that he is offended by the image, that's his right and, possibly, a natural reaction. But the fact that he wants $25,000 for himself and $1 billion (!!!!!!!!!!!) for the "Hindu people" is just fucking rediculous!! And for what?? Emotional distress?? I highly doubt seeing a fucking image on a beer is worth $25,000 in that fictional legal phrase "emotional distress". If you were really that serious about your religion you would live in a Hindu country. Now stop ruining my country and get the fuck out!!

Now that I think about it, I'm emotionally distressed because I can't get the beer I like. I'm gonna sue the shit out of Brij Dhir.

Lost Coast beer is my favorite beer in the world. I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys true beer. Now that I've seen this I encourage all of you to pick up a Lost Coast brew if it's sold in your area. It tastes great, you won't regret it. Keep this company alive, I don't want to see another growing business get destroyed but some retarded law suit.

That is just BS. He's just a stupid foreigner who can't handle a little marketing scheme that happens to include a god. Nobody said he had to look at the label. He just needs to move back to his own country where there is no freedom of speech for him to worry about. What a dumbass.

But yeah, it is in no way inhibiting the worship or beliefs of anyone of the Hindu faith.

If you were really serious about your beer drinking you might drink a real American beer. No?

Lost Coast sells all sorts of styles. And they're all great. Indica is probably my least favorite but I'm still pissed about it being gone because of a retarded law suit.

BTW, what do you consider a "real" American beer?

Don't know, I'm not an American. I just know that that elephant beer doesn't look very American to me. I read this from your rant:

"If you were really that serious about your religion you would live in a Hindu country. Now stop ruining my country and get the fuck out!!"

The example I'll use is from a beer I'm familiar with. It's called Kokanee. The mascot is a sasquatch, which appears on the bottles. It is brewed in Canada. India has sasquatches. Would the Indians who drink imported Canadian Kokanee think that this was a misconception of their country's animal for Canadians to have the sasquatch on their beer bottle?

I just don't know how you can tell them to get out of your country when they made you so happy with their beer. Am I wrong to think that? Have I been misinformed or am I just looking at this the wrong way? I'm not trying to be an asshole or anything, I just find this somewhat interesting. Brewed wherever it's brewed, it's still Indian beer right? I do know they make Budweiser in Canada, which is a brand that originated in the States.

It would suck if they took away my favorite drink, so I can kind of understand where you're coming from, I think. Sorry to hear about this.

The brewery is in Cali isnt it? On a more serious note, that elephant is freaking wasted! Look at its eyes, that bastard has aparently drank his weight in beer.

I am in NO WAY telling Hindus to leave this country. Diversity is what makes this country great. And if Mr. Dhir had simply brought a lawsuit against Lost Coast and asked them to remove the beer (which they did 1 day after the charges came about) it would have been all fine and dandy. But now he wants $25,000 for himself and $1 billion dollars for Hindu people around the world is just stupid. This post is more about dumb lawsuits rather than beer, religion, or anything else.

You can't blame a man for trying to fit into his new country by filing a retarded lawsuit. It's the american way :)
