do ball bearing turbos still need an oil line feeding them?

Yes. They require less pressure/flow however. Most poeple take oil from the head for BB turbos. BB turbos will also all be water cooled, since there is less oil flow to cool them. Standard bearing turbos can be had in dry venter section variety. All turbos will require an oil feed.

They are more sensitive to crap in your oil, so clean oil and good filters are required. Most poeple put a 10 micron 4an filter on the feed line too. I personally never saw any proof that they spool any better than regular bushing turbos. A friend had a 56 trim wheel in a GT14 BB turbo, I had a 56 trim in a regular TDO6h configuration. Same compressor and turbine housings, different turbine wheel. We both got 25 psi at 4400 rpm.

I have a habit of taking out the thrust bearing. On a BB turbo there isnt one, so I see that as a slight advantage.
