93 ecsort auto trans please help?

I just picked up a 93 escort lx 1.9 and I am desperate to get it moving. it starts and runs but when I put it into gear nothing happens. I hasn't been driven for about 8 months but it was working when it was parked. I checked the cable linkage and it seams to be shifting at the tranny but nothing happens.

automatic tranny?
Do the RPMS change when you put it in gear?
Check fluid?

It is an automatic. When I put it in drive there is no rpm change, no noises, nothing happens. I checked the fluid and it seemed ok.
