My 1992 Buick Regal Custom has a problem turning over. When I first discovered this problem starting I jumped it and it worked no problem. I took it to the corner store and back no problem. The next day it wouldn't start or jump start. I replaced the battery since it needed a new one soon anyway, but it still won't start. It clicks once when I turn the key in the ignition. So I think it is the starter that is the problem. Since both the fuses and battery work alright.

So it leaves me with this:

Is this THE REAL problem, or could it be something else

Does anyone have a service manual of a 1992 Buick Regal Custom 3.8? And if so would they mind sending me pages of how to replace the starter? and pics of where the starter is, I think I know which part it is, but i'd like to double check.

Is replacing such a thing really hard? I'll be having my more mechanically inclined friends helping me or Should I just suck it up and have it towed and checked out?

Replacing the starter in general is not too bad i don't know for sure about the 3.8, check with autozone.com in the repair guides section for location and replacement info, but i would suggest to just go ahead and buy the manual your self. it is invaluable to have especicaly if you are a do it your selfer.

I have a 96 Custom with the 3.8 engine. The starter is not hard to replace on this engine; it's located just under the front of the car (left side of the engine) and is held on by two bolts. If you have air conditioning, you will have to remove the air conditioning compressor first and swing it out of the way; you don't have to break any lines open to do this. Once it is out of the way, remove the wires connected to the starter solenoid, remove the two mounting bolts, and the whole starter assembly comes right out.

Any auto parts store can test the starter and find out if it's okay. If the starter checks out good, your problem is most likely the same problem I had last month. The upper intake manifold, which is plastic on this engine, had cracked and engine coolant had leaked into several of the cylinders. Since water won't compress, the starter cannot turn the engine over with coolant in the cylinders. For this problem, the upper intake manifold had to be replaced.

88Regal Custom is right, though. If you're going to be doing even minor repairs on this car, you need to obtain a service manual. All the auto parts stores or bookstores sell them. You can also find them at most public libraries, but the drawback there is that you can't check them out and take them home with you.

Happy troubleshooting, and good luck!!
