camshaft sensor

I have a 96 305 that will misfire occasionally on the highway. When I read the codes it pointed at the camshaft sensor being open. My repair manual mentions the sensor being in the distributor but that is about it. I've never had the distributor out of this vehicle, will it be a major job replacing this sensor?

Thanks

ALWAYS INCLUDE VEHICLE MODEL AND FUEL CONFIGURATION.THIS IS NOT A TOUGH JOB FOR SOMEONE WITH PATIENCE..SPACE IS USUALLY LIMITED ON THESE SET UPS..BUY THE NEW SENSOR SO YOU KNOW WHAT YOU WILL BE CHANGING AND GET TO YOUR DISTRIBUTOR..IF YOU NEED ANY SHORTY OF "S" STYLE SCREWDRIVERS TO REMOVE THE CAP GO AND BUY THEM..DO NOT OVER POWER THE CAP OR INTERNAL PARTS BECAUSE THEY WILL CRACK..TAKE YOUR TIME USE GOOD LIGHT AND THE PROPER TOOLS..

Thanks, got the camshaft sensor replaced, which cleared that code. It was fairly simple other than the location.

Sadly that did not fix the problem. The truck is a 96 1500 with a 305 and auto tran, it runs rough from time to time and seems to be getting worse. It started out with 3 codes, an evap system purge code po441,
the camshaft postion code po340, and a mass air flow circuit low signal code po102. The first two have been dealt with and out attempts on the mass air flow sensor so far have been fruitless.

We've tried checking all the connections, a clean air filter, cleaning the sensor wires with spray carb cleaner and thumping the engine firmly while chanting a curse or two.

Would a problem with the sensor be linked to the truck running rough on an intermittent basis? Can it be cleaned/repaired successfully if so? Should I look anywhere else first before spending the $200 for a new MAF sensor?

There was a K&N filter on the engine until recently, we are back to a standard filter at this point.

Yes The Maf Sensor Is Directly Tied In With Your Fuel Delivery System.
See If You Can Have An Auto Electric Shop Test It For You Once You Remove It Also Some Auto Parts Stores Test Various Ignition Componants For Free..look Into That..

The fuel filter and plugs were the first things changed, the rotor and cap look good and are fairly new. The voltage appears to be okay, and I've checked the wireing harness for damage.

One thing interesting, the truck runs better with the MAF disconnected. I figure that is a sign it is really screwed up and probably needs replaced. If it doesn't work I'm sure I'll be posting again soon.

Thanks for the ideas
