I have a '95 Nissan Maxima SE with about 125000 miles. My "Check Engine Light" came on and when I did a diagnosis I got the following pulses.
10 long and 8 short - which is a EVAP Canister Purge Volume Control Valve
3 long and 4 short - which is a Knock Sensor
Not sure what these are and how to fix them...any help!!!

you have to replace both.
get a haynes or factory service manual and replace it yourself if you have some standard tools.

Make sure your car is running correctly first before you just replace the knock sensor. If your plugs are bad, air filter or gas filter is dirty you could be getting a lot of ping. Also make sure your using 91 octain gas. If everything is in good running condition and your still getting the knock sensor code, replace it.
As far as the purge valve code goes, I've found 2 things that fix this. The first is the throttle body. If your all full of carbon, the vaccum line hole may be clogged. This will not allow the purge to work. Clean it first. www.motorvate.ca has instructions on how to do this. If you still get the error code (may take a week before it comes back) You can take the purge valve apart and clean it out. WD-40 loosens it up and usually puts it back in working order. The purge valve and canister are located in the rear of the car. It's tucked up behind the left rear wheel. You can take the whole assy. out of the car for service.
