rear diff capacity?

Changed out all fluids (trans pan was a bitch cause of the exhaust cross over). Anyway, the fill plug on the rear diff stripped out, so it ain't going nowhere, and had to fill the diff. through the vent tube! What is the capacity of the 10 bolt rear? ('99 1/2 ton 4x4) Can't check level if you can't get out the plug, so I put in 2.5 quarts, how far off am I?

2.5 quarts is just about right. Specs from Haynes and Amsoil say 4.9 pints. I just changed mine with 2.25 quarts, and the level is in the range printed on the diff. tag. It may take a little more after I check on a level surface.

Thank you I'll quit worring! I was ready to drill a hole in the cover at the same level as the fill plug, and use a hex head self tapping screw with rubber gasket to seal it! I thought with the vent it would just burp out the excess oil, but I have read that you can blow out axle seals with to much oil! And we all know what too little lube can do!

weld a nut onto the fill plug and you should get it out,

Are there enough threads on the fill plug to be able to get a big set of vise grips on it? I'd put some "PB Blaster" lubricant on it too, I really think that stuff works great.

No plug is countersunk, can't get a grip on it. Buddy said I should have heated it up. I tried the welding a nut on, and could only get a crappy tack weld due to the limited size of the plug--put a wrench on and the nut just twisted off. Drain plug on the tranny pan was also superman tight, it got stripped real good, but came off--dropped the pan anyways--that is another 4 hour job! the pipes gotting come down, or the tranny gotta go up!

It's the 3/8" square hole in the filler plug that is stripped right?

It would probably be a real biatch, but can you possibly drill a hole in the filler plug an useing a big easy out? Of course you'd have to make sure you got all the drill tailings out of the differential when you're done. I've also heard of using dry ice on parts to shrink them down before trying to get them out.

Also, could you possibly cut a notch in the plug and use a chisel to pound the notch and try to loosen it? Or, can you get a chisel to wedge in the square hole and use that to get torque on it?

Way I figure, if I striped out the 3/8" square hole, it ain't coming out! I may piss with it some more, but that really pissed me off!
