i was reading about torques and planetary gearsets and its pretty rough so i guess mechanics had to put in ALOT of homework before they can get their license or is it more like on the job training if u now wut i mean?

i took auto training before and i learned the planetary gears too but i dont think its useful on the job...I think you have to be actually working at a job to learn......if you want to be an auto engineer or designer, then its good to know all those stuffs. IMO

What is planetary gearset? Does it refer to the same gearbox assembly?

It is a gear set typically used in automatic transmissions where there is one central gear with two or more gears around it. The central gear is named the sun gear (since it is in the center like the sun) and the outer planet gears are named for the fact that they go around the sun gear.

there is no "license" but there is ASE certification, it requires two year experince, passing a test, and a letter of recommendation IIRC, plus retesting every few years. pass all the tests in one catagory and you become master certified, all the tests in two catagorys and you are double master certified. i beleave only 29 people have ever become triple master certified.(i have had the honor of having a triple master teach me in the past)

it is useful if you rebuild transmissions

a planetary gear set is used in most automatic transmissions and 4X4 transfer cases for gear ratios. it has three parts: a center sun gear, an outer internal tooth ring gear, and a carrier with "planet gears"(they spin around the sun). depending on which part is the input, the output, and which is held stationary 6 different gear radios can be used from one gearset, plus a direct drive ratio.
