712s are terrible tires, I know people that had bad experiences with them as in they don't consistantly handle the same each time you hop in the car.
I'd recommend Yokohama ES100s, Falkens (any model really) or Dunlop Direzzas.

The BF Goodridge KD and the BF Goodridge KDW-NT ("new thread") also know as the KDW2, are good tires. The KD is a dry "summer tire", the KDW is both wet and dry. They are not "Cheap" in any respect though. The performance is great, but like many higher end tires (like Pirrelli) the price reflects it. If you can afford it I'df recommend it.
When I need new tires those are what I am most likely going to go with, as my I have been told my Pirrelli P7000 Supersports are discontuined. Sad too...they really COULD handle light snow like Pirrelli claimed. Had to drive home in a blizzard 2 winters ago from Seattle to Portland with em (and no traction device since studs/chains + 17's = not going to happen, LOL). They were a good all-around all weather tire. They were great in the rain, never hydroplains at all..and really COULD handle light mud and snow (like the M+S rating suggested). Oh well, the Goodridge KDW's are better dry and wet tires anyway.

Yes the KD's. I'm now accepting donations for some. :grinyes:
But seriously, I'm waiting for the Falken Azenis RT-615s to come out in 215/45 16 anytime soon here.
Another good tire I hear is the Bridgestone Potenza RE730. Or if you really like Kumho, I'd highly suggest the Ecsta MX over the 712's.

Nope, 3 auto-X's, 2 track days of road racing, and 10k street miles and mine are almost near their end. Not too bad though considering all the racing on them.

i have the kumho ectsa 711 tires... no they are not the best tire out there... but for summer tires they are great... theyre real inexspensive for 17's. i just cant afford to spend 150 dollars on a tire... otherwise, im sure i would see how much better they get...but compare to a normal tire... kumho tires are great

I had some, and they suck. Handling with them is OK, I auto-X'ed with mine a couple times when I had them, but they are not that grippy. In the rain they are literally a safety hazard.
Just my :2cents: here, but if you can't afford good decent tires for "17's you shouldn't be buying a wheel that big if you are going to do any performance type or driving that requires good handling. Just like suspension, you really do get what you pay for with tires as well, except in some very rare instances... Utimate handling tires like Advan A032R's or A048's cost a lot for a reason, and they only last like 8k miles at max too. The rare exception is Azenis Sports, or Azenis ST115's, both are very sticky tires, but inexpensive. Check those out for summer tires. The 711's are fine for a budget, but don't expect much from them... I threw on some 205/50 15 Yokohama ES100's to replace the 711's with, and a night and day differance, of course the Yoko's set me back almost $500 when all was said and done, that included road hazard coverage on them though. They are still about $100 a pop however, and that's just for "15's. $150 isn't anything for "17's, especially when Vipers use 335/35 ZR17 tires that run over $375 a tire!!

Ive driven a 92 Honda Civic CX with those tires(the BFG KDs), they're very good.

you could also go to a website where tires are rated... and some even break it down... like dry weather, wet weather. etc... you can compare them agains other very good tires and see how they match up
Edited on accident, when I meant to quote it. Insert hand smacking forehead smilie here...

Yeah, that's a good general way, but keep in mind those ratings (one Tire Racks site for example) are 100% based off of people who run them, not the manufactures or Tire Rack themselves. I did one for the Kumho 711's on there, and I gave them a very low rating, I didn't factor price into that, because a crappy is a crappy tire, cheap price isn't going to make me like it any more. I guess I value a tire's ability as the highest factor for me, and price somewhere towards the bottom. No I won't just spend any price on a tire (hell, I shop around for the best prices) but I do value it's handling capabilities and rain capabilities and safety worthyness pretty high over price.

Just be sure you get something that'll handle rain well. I drove 400 miles in the torential rain we had here in CA this past winter one weekend, and I feared for my life, literally! Azenis Sports DO NOT like rain, I mean anything more than just damp wet ground, hit a puddle with them and you have no control.
