idle and stall

I have read other posts regarding low idle and stalls, which my 99 malibu
does. After running for a while, about 30-40 minutes is when the problem starts, short trips it does not happen. With the radio turned down, there is kind of low hum or whine you can hear before turning the car off. At highway speed, the idle is about 1500 rpm, when stopped it is about 400 rpm. I guess my concern is the whining or humming noise which is only apparent after running for this time period.
