Whenever I turn on a/c in my '85 ciera I hear all kinds of roaring type noises and my car starts running crappy. For example last night car was running perfect, then I turned on a/c and I could barely get the car to take off from stops until I turned a/c back off. What could be the problem here, is the compressor putting to much strain on the engine or what? Has anyone had this problem before or know what's wrong? Oh yeah and I can be cruising down the interstate w/out a/c on and it runs perfect but switch on a/c when cruising theres like a hesitation or something every 30 seconds or so. Please let me know anything I can do cuz it's hot as hell down here w/out my a/c.

If this is a 4 cylinder than you will lose a lot of power with the a/c on.
mine was a 6 cylinder and I could feel the power drain with the a/c.
The roar you here is probably the a/c cooling fan by the radiator that comes on with the compressor, if it's not coming on have it checked asap. The highway hesatation you feel is the compressor cycling on and off.

If it is your water pump(or anything else), don't take it to an Oldsmobile dealer. It will cost way too much. Find the mechanic your Oldsmobile dealer sends his extra work to and use him or her. These outside mechanics are more knowledgeable and do not tend to cheat you on labor costs.

Actually don't take it to any car dealer with a shop, unless you have a warranty.
