Signature Sizes And Other Problems...

Hi. I have noticed that there are several guideline issues not being followed such as signature sizes and such. Some of you might notice your signatures are smaller than what you remember them being. I have reduced their size. Remember, not everyone has a large 19" LCD monitor! The site must remain friendly for the majority of our members. Another thing: proper English and grammar usage (or as close as you can get). We have members from all over the world so a little decency and common sense (perhaps I may be asking for a bit much here) when writing a sentence is requested. :) Just because school is out doesn't mean you can forget what you learned and run rampant on these forums. If this thread seems a bit harsh, then my point is getting across. We have lost too many good builders due to AF being considered the "kiddie forum". I will do everything in my power to keep this from happening again in the future. here's a bit of advice: USE THE SEARCH FUNCTION AND READ THE FAQ!!! Thanks for your time and happy building!! :)

Isn't using big fonts is considering offensig too ? :D
Just a joke.
I was one of the first to scream about signature, and it never makes anything (I'm sure if you make a search, you will see many of my post, years ago, complaining about signature size.)

Good thing to point this out again as a reminder.
just a little tip : you can use mozilla and with the adblock plugin you can block whatever you don't want to see -permanently-.
No Af ads, no big sigs for me!

I would've been happy to change it if I realized it was to big (it's fine for the fifty billion other forums I go to) I would like to know if It could be any bigger than the changed size? I'd be happy to resize it properly.

Thats exactly why people refer to this as the kiddie forum, this isn't one of the fifty billion (slight over exxageration there maybe? ) other forums. Tonio stated the rules , just follow them sheesh

Too bad you can't block the stupid paragraph-long sigs that take up half the screen. Who the heck needs to see your IM conversation with someone or what lb/hr injectors you installed in your car, every single time you post. At the very least keep it under a few lines. I could turn sigs completely off, but there are many people with useful ones.
If you must post more than once in a thread, at least try and remember to turn off the sig on the subsequent posts.
While we're on "other problems", why is the search function so pushed yet at the same time someone is reprimanded for bringing up an old thread? Bringing up an old thread means someone was using the search, and posting in that thread keeps the total amount of threads of that subject to a minimum. But then the thread gets locked when someone brings it up? Then if someone does not do a search and gets chewed out, the thread continues anyway without being locked and picks up exactly what was said in the older thread. Contradicting, isn't it? Maybe this is why we have endlesss "airbrush compressor" threads.
For example, http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=39729. Not picking on you Tonioseven, but it's just the latest example and you happened to be closer :)
Now, poor harry2pop, who was just following the rules by doing a search, now has his question locked. So what if the thread is old? It's not like he answered to a 3 year old "for sale" ad. The subject was even correct, which would make searching easier, compared to some of the cryptic titles here like "Question" or "Has anyone done this?" If our new friend harry2pop isn't discouraged by the confusing rules yet, decides to post a new thread, well then we'd have yet another Viper GTS thread. My guess is, after his first post here being locked, he went off to find another board or is just lurking now.

First of, I fully agree with Tonio. Iīll propably resize my sig soon as well because itīs bigger then most other sigs.
I do not agree with you 008. Youīre correct that bringing up old threads means you used the search function. Though, what is the need for bringing it up? If you have a question, just PM the person. The PM system works outstanding so why not? Besides that, if everyone would start bringing up old threads, this forum would become one big mess. And not using the search is! annoying.

No shit Sherlock, did you want me to say the "16 forums and the 3 previous ones I was in acquaintance with" gimme a break. There was nothing out of line in my post, I'd seen others sigs that were bigger so I assumed I could have it a bit bigger. I never questioned the rules. Aside from the point, who hell was talking to you?

Really, it depends. On the example I provided, what mess would it have been if someone answered him? If someone else needed the same answer, it would be in that thread. So I PM him with the answer, how does that help everyone else? Should we all just PM each other if we have an answer? I don't see how it would be less of a mess if old threads were locked and repeats from non-searchers were left open. Again, my example of countless airbrush compressor threads proves this. The point is, someone's gotta pick one way or the other. Locking threads because someone did a search and at the same time leaving repeat threads open because someone didn't do a search makes no sense.
Some comments in this thread alone (not you, Bas) is why this place is thought of as the kiddie forums. (sigh)

OO8 brings up a contradictory flaw in A/F about bringing up old threads. In the FAQ's that we ask everyone to read first, there is conflicting information.
If you read A/F's own guidelines it says:
POSTING IN CLOSED OR OUTDATED THREADS:
If a thread has been closed, there is probably a logical reason for it. If you feel that the reason(s) for closure of the original thread are unjustified or wish further clarification feel free to contact any member of the moderating team. However, do not start a new thread about another closed thread.
Please avoid posting or voting in outdated threads. It merely clutters up the message board and makes it more difficult for fellow members to sort through the vast amount of information contained on the boards. If you have new and important information to add regarding a past discussion, feel free to start a new thread.
Then we get to the Car Modeling FAQ's:
Is it okay to post in old threads?
The reason we use a thread format is so that posts about a similar topic are all in the same place. It is preferable to post anything about model X in the thread about model X, regardless of how old the thread is, so that when people go looking for information about model X, it will be easy to find. That's why we don't delete or lock old threads. If you have something to add to an old thread, then by all means, bring it back up.
This needs to be addressed, because it's obviously hard enough for newcomers to read through all the FAQ's and know everything they need to do right with their postings before everyone starts jumping their shit over sometimes trivial items. We need to be consistent, and the above shows an area where we clearly are not.
Personally I think we should allow the proper usage of old threads, there is a time and a place to bring them back up w/o the necessity of starting another thread on the same subject.

Bob brought up a valid point. Back when the FAQ guidelines were written for this forum we allowed the rising of old threads. But the forum didnt have 300,000 posts. So that should be amended. I still get called on it sometimes.
008 posts another valid point and has a good answer I believe. A thread should be locked and the offender repramanded (from the case of resurection) if the reply had no meaning. Many threads are resurected to say things like "cool" or "pics dont show", in that case the resurection had no meaning. Otherwise the thread should be left open with no reprecussion.

Thanks for posting the reminder Tonio.
I have some sympathy for the discussion regarding old threads. I feel it boils down to a judgement call, as Mike said. Sometimes it is right and proper to revive an old thread, so long as you are contributing then go ahead I say.

While we're all sitting, scratching our heads, wondering 'hey, did Tonio mean me??', the thought occured to me that I've never seen a standardised description for how large is too large. OK, you've convinced me not to include my recipie for key lime pie and baby pics of my cats in my sig (damnit!)- but if I add another boxtop, will I have gone over the edge? Seriously, is there an established guideline?
RallyRaider

No, we've always avoided a specific pixcel by pixcel definition of sig size. It is left to the moderators to judge. I think you sig is okay as it stands, but probably wouldn't want to be much higher. If you want to add another box top then reduce the other two and add the new one horizontaly.

If the sig doesnt load while I am reading the post then I just scroll past it.

Some comments in this thread alone (not you, Bas) is why this place is thought of as the kiddie forums. (sigh)
Its understandable why you say the things you do, because it can be a catch 22. Search, make good posts and share a decent build. Thats all it will take around here.
Your posts sound like the one's I made 900 posts ago  nothings going to change just take from it what you can. I'm sure you do. :p

I agree with blueboost, and Tonio too. Tonio is just reminding us to control our signature size and I know that there is no intention of his to offend anyone. It's just that some of us in the other side of the world didn't have a superfast internet speed and it does not help with big signatures (I can and will, on the other hand, wait for big pictures to upload though :icon16: ).
I'm not perfect and my english is not that good so I try to arrange and check on my grammar before I post it. Some users even use language translation software to make them able to communicate and share ideas in this forum and I think that is a good sign that this forum is accepted from all parts of the world. I don't think the use of improper spelling helps to get the message through, right? (At least from what I know of that there is no language translation software that can do this :) )
Just my 2 cents...

Sometimes this is what it takes to get people to actually read a post.

I think that is exactly the point tonio is trying to get across. This question pops up on every forum i`ve attended; Use proper ( understandable) language! With the coming of realtime messages (MSN, SMS e.t.c.) people do "shortcuts" in the actual writing of the language. I donīt bother if itsīs a chat with a friend, but if you formulate a post that a few hundred or thousand will read, one should think about the spelling/Capital letters e.t.c.
No one is waiting this very second for your reply. Calm down..
And donīt you find it so difficult to read when there is a stream of words without commas, full stop ( or what you call that-> . point ) and other tools to make the language easy to understand?
