speakers? subs? amp?

i want to keep my head unit with cd changer but my speakers sound like crap. can i just change the speakers? any specific ones? do i need an amp? should i just get subs? if i can get away with just new speakers ill just do that. otherwise if i have to get a new system i guess ill just go all the way with amps and subs but i kind of dont want to spend all that money. can i just get new, better aftermarket speakers? not OEM.

It depends on the headunit you have now. Most of the time, yes you can swap out the speakers. I will tell you that by changing out the headunit will provide you with a major improvement.

You can swap out the speakers on any car without buying anything new. Just unplug the wires from the old speakers and put the new speakers their place and plug the wires into the new ones.

Now, you can upgrade amplifiers, and by upgrading amplifiers, you have the ability to put more power to the speakers themselves. The stock one will work fine with aftermarket speakers though.

By just getting subs wont do you anything for mid or high range, only the bass. Even if you decide to get an amp for your speakers, you would still have to get a second amp for your subs.

You can swap out your speakers fairly easily. If you do not want to upgrade your amp you can go for Infinity Reference (6x9 in the back, 6.5 in the doors) and they sound pretty good with the lower amount of power. If you are going for a new amp as well you might want to consider Infinity Kappa. There are of course other brands as well, these are the two I played around and tested.

For the most part, just $$$. 2-way means that you have one woofer cone and one tweeter cone. 3-way, you have the above plus another "midrange" driver mounted next to the tweeter. When going with smaller speakers like 6.5", there's no need for 3ways.

would it be easy to wire new amps in? would i have to rewire the speakers? if i were to keep the stock amps, do i have to rewire for aftermarket speakers? what numbers should i be looking at (i.e. watts, peak, ohms etc.) when looking at speakers if im going to keep the stock amps? same question but aftermarket amps?

I just installed 2 10 inch subs and an amp into my Stealth. The head unit had already been changed to an Alpine with Sub out capabilities.

The amp has a built in crossover so the subs just receive the signal they are supposed to receive.

I will be modding the box to fit in vertically behind the rear seat in the back, that way I do not lose the hatch space.

I ran all new wires to the amp. Most stock amps do not run a low enough guage wire to supply power to high output amps.

I am running 250 watts to the subs...its not a huge amount of power, but it sure makes a difference.

I can also turn the system up much louder now as I can turn down the bass for the other speakers.

Anyhow, to install a new amp you'll want to run new power and ground wires for it. You'll also have to pull speaker wires from the amp to your speakers unless already provided (and even then it might be a good idea if they are old and crappy). Of course you will also need signal wires from the head unit to the amp.

You should also consider that the space underneath the seat is limited. I would estimate that max size for the amp would be around 13.5W X 15.75L X 2.5H An amp 3" high might fit. Don't quote me on that though. I relocated my two amps to the trunk myself.
