A/C Unit for a 93 Metro

I've got a 93 metro, that I've recently purchased, and it did not come with an Air Conditioning unit at all, and since it gets real hot in NY, I was curious if it is possible to order parts to get an A/C installed.

If so, what parts would I need and what kind of cost am I looking at?

Same quandry...I'd not attempt an AC 'mod' without the complete kit. It would probably cust more that the car is worth. :uhoh:

Ebay has listings for the '95 and up...I'd give a fin for a kit for my '92. :naughty:

lol. Anyways, on a serious note. You can do a basic setup, or a proper setup. There's a LOT of parts behind the dash. It would be a huge pain to do a stock metro a/c setup.

Ok, I just did this a/c install myself on a 93 convertible. It is a lot of work like the previous replys stated,but it can be done. You will want to go to chevy. dealer and get a print-out of the a/c components for the 89-94 metro,then goto the wrecking yard with the print-out in hand and pull all related components. Keep in mind that some of the parts are discontenued or are real hard to find.I pick-up the whole system from a yard and pulled it my-self for $145.50.(excluding the in-dash and engine compartment a/c wirring harnesses).I bought those new. The most exspesive part in the whole system is the evaporater core box(if you have to get it from chevy. dealer for $1,200.00). As far as discont. parts the major one is called a A/C wide-open throttle switch. It is only used with 5-speed manual tranys.But,it is avail.at a suzuki dealer for suzuki swifts for under $30.They call it A/C on-off throttle switch,located in engine compartment.(yes,it will work for metros). You will have to replace a few parts like the o-rings,accumulator,etc.... It not the whole story,but its just the tip of the ice-burg. Its alot of elbow grease for this project. I would rather shave with pepper spray then do that mod.

I have done it twice. Very straight foward if you know what you are doing. The blower assembly drops out of the way, then mount the evaporator. Mount the condeser and fan, then compressor. Install hoses, the wiring. Don't for get to get the air valve so your idle will come up when the air is on. Charge the system ( about 1 lbs.) and your good to go.

It is too expensive to do, and requires a good A/C mechanic that knows what he is doing.
I can do it myself, but I would not even attempt it.
It is not cost effective for that year.
Too many other used vehicles you can buy with A/C.
Your best bet is to buy a low cost fan that mounts on the dash from a parts store.

How about this. Buy a 100,000 watt inverter and mount a big window AC unit in the hatch LOL!!!!!!!!! That would be so getto it may catch on LOL!!!!

Cost effective?....buying a new car and eating the depreciation while getting much less fuel milage than my Metro can is more cost effective? :shakehead
