HELP!!! Timing Chain Tensioner Question

I recently had to replace the water pump on my 1999 Chevrolet Cavalier Z24. To do so you have take apart a lot of stuff. In the process the timing chain tensioner was compressed and I now have a ticking noise when my engine warms up. I read on the box of a new timing chain tensioner that it is compressed when in the box and it is to stay that way until you install it. After it is installed it is to be reset, but it does not tell you on the box how, and the manual that I have for my car doesn't say how to do it. So my question is how the heck do I reset it so that my car will stop making that annoying clicking sound?

if it is anything like the GM tensioner i have in my hand, there is a spring loaded lock with teeth on the rod of the tensioner. the lock has a little lever off to the side with a hole on the end of the lever. normally the lock will allow the rod to push out but not back in. hold the lever in place, the lock will release and the rod can move in and out freely. if you try to press the rod in with the lock engaged, the lever will move just to the point that you can secure a allen wrench or similar tool between the hole and the case, this way, you can press the rod in, then lock it in place so the rod won't move in or out, this is useful for installition.
