Emergency Crews Respond To Fatal Crash At California Speedway
Second Person Hospitalized After Crash

POSTED: 3:23 pm PDT June 2, 2005
UPDATED: 5:49 am PDT June 3, 2005

LOS ANGELES -- Two people were killed Thursday in a crash at California Speedway in Fontana.

Images: Speedway Crash

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A private car club was renting the speedway at the time of the crash.

A Porsche Carrera GT crashed into a retaining wall and came to rest on the track's infield. Authorities said two people were in the vehicle at the time of the crash.

One person was pronounced dead at the scene.

The second person in the car was transported by Mercy Air to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center. That person later died.

The track is home to the California 500, Nextel Cup 500, the Toyota Indy 400 and other motorsport events. The 2-mile D-shaped oval surrounds an infield portion used for road courses and a 13-turn interior test circuit.

Private parties can rent the track to turn laps.

:disappoin yep, it's sad and a shame. But those things happen on the track. Man, in Germany at the Nurburgring those things happen ver frequently. you race at that on your own risk, with the normal one way road regulations.

Shame for the nice carrera gt too.

Well, it was stupid. He was going around 165 mph when a Ferrari just pulled out in front of him. A marshall apperently signaled the Ferrari that he is all clear to enter the track, not realizing how fast the Carrera GT was going. He swerved and hit the wall.

The passenger was a potential buyer for the CGT.

Btw, do you know Mark Wilmots and Emille Mpenza?

Very sad to hear about this, especially when it could have been avoided. Looks like some tires or other safety devices on that retaining wall would'nt hurt either.... :disappoin

people die all the time, how is this any different? because it involved a nice car i should care? lol hell no. If you wanna do 165MPH in a car, you better be ready to accept your fate if anything should go wrong.

Theres over 6 billion people in the world, like anyone really cares if 2 of them die?

I'm sure family members, friends, and those who witenessed it cared very much for the incident that occured. It is pretty sad that it happened, but it was pretty much gauranteed to happen considering how fast they were going.

If there was one way I'd want to leave this world, it would be that way...hauling ass in a 1/2 million dollar exotic car.

Its always sad to have someone die, and my prayers are with the friends/family, but at the same time, as bad as this sounds, this is one of those cases you wanna point out when ever someone comes on here to bitch at street racers. Even in controled enviroments, shit happens. I hope the friends and family of the victims can get past the pain that this death will cause. Of course, I'm Irish, and our idea of a funeral is to get as drunk as possible in the honor of the passed family member...

It's actually a friend of a another forum member (not this forum).

I was gonna post that video and then found out that it was actually that guy who died. He said he used it as his daily driver, was on his 3rd set of brakes or something.

Anyway, we know people die every day. I posted a racing video so stop bitching Jayson. I just thought it was a weird coincidence that the guy from that racing video is on the news.

Although I did not know him too well personally, I’ve had a few conversations with him. His name is Ben Keaton and he was a very nice and good guy. :( Show some respect.

At least they were doing it on a track, Jay-SON. Don't post in here about your street-racing again, if you're insinuating that parties doing what they SHOULD be doing with the right kind of car, dying in a freak accident, is somehow irresponsible, and their fault.

Go ahead, bitch back.

On a side note, I know that road they were racing on.

That's Pacific Coast Highway heading northbound heading into Newport Beach.

Lots of money there... lots of it.

Sad stuff. :(
