92 explorer wont shift

My husband got in it this morning and the thing won't shift out of first gear! It has drive and reverse but wont shift out anyone have any ideas? We know nothing about transmissions

If the shifter is on the column check to see if there is a screw/bolt on the floor. I had one fall out while driving, and my husband had to put it back in under the panel below the stering wheel.
