This (recently purchased) '97 CVPI is the 1st car I've owned w/NO distributor. Is there a "trick" to removing the coil-packs from the plugs when changing? I've heard they are expensive ($100/each)....Tom
P.S.--Are platinum plugs worth the extra cost?

The coils are easily removed. Just unhook the wires, remove the little bolt and pull up on coil. The double platinum plugs run in our cruisers for approximately 80,ooo miles. The regular plugs run approximately 40,000 miles. SO it will be your call on those. Just be sure to use Motorcraft parts when you replace them. A lot of parts houses sell Motorcraft. They are also cheaper than the dealer. Good luck with it.

Sorry about the earlier post. The 97 has 2 coil packs. One on the front of each head. I was thinking of a 98 or newer. All you have to do on these is grab the wire, twist and pull them off the plug. Guess I am getting way2old. Brain fart. :screwy: .

way2old----thanks again. I figured this engine has only 2 coils--4 plug-wires running from a "box" on the front of each head.
For an "oldtimer" like me, this engine compartment looks like something from a "Star Wars" movie. (lol)..Tom

Thanks guys---obviously I'm NOT a mechanic, but finances force me to do as much as I can, myself.
