95 pickup odometer problem

I have a 1995 Nissan 4 wd pickup with an intermittent odometer. It sometimes works, sometimes not. Speedometer always works, as well as the tach. I pulled the instrument cluster and cleaned up all the connections, to no avail. Is it possible the speed sensor could be the culprit?
Also, when I bought the truck it had oversize tires on it (P265) but the speed sensor was never changed. So when the speedometer says 40, I am really going 45. If I want 60 I set the needle at 53. Not fun. Does anyone make a speed sensor that will work right with my tires?
Thanx in advance.

chumley,

my 95 4x4 odometer and tripometer stopped working as well, but the speedometer still works. Strange. I never got it fixed, but planned on never selling the truck. mine stopped working when I tried to use the tripometer one day. let me know if you ever find a fix. sorry i couldn't off any help.

I am no mechanic...just do little stuff here and there, I really hope you get your problem fixed and can give me some advice on how to fix mine.

95 nissan pickup. yesterday speedometer quit working completely. Is there a speed sensor to replace? Where is it located & can a used one from a salvage yard work? Saw a new one listed for $156. but have not yet checked e-Bay. any advice would be appreciated. Thanks,

Wow. I found a reply to this old thread in an old mail box. Surprised any of it still works.
It may be the speed sensor, but what I ultimately did to fix my problem was get the instrument cluster out of a wrecked Nissan suv at a junk yard. It cost $60 but the guy gave me a 30 day warranty to make sure it was good. It was, but I still had the bad speed reading due to the oversize tires. Turns out there is a small trim pot on the circuit board in the back of the instrument cluster. I had to remove the cluster to turn it with a little teeny screwdriver, but it did adjust for my 31" tires. The control is not labeled, nor are there any marks. I used a gps and just winged it with trial and error. Works fine now.
As to the squealing mentioned elsewhere, it went away for a year or so, then started back just recently. I had the whole front end torn down, and the mechanic could find no problems at all. It just seems to come and go.

On my 95 Nissan pickup I removed the speed sensor from side of transmission. Found gear on end of sensor had damaged to teeth. The shaft on sensor wouldn't turn also. i searched for a week trying to locate a used speed sensor at salvage yards with no luck. Had to order new from Nissan dealer for $185. fOUND THAT THE GEAR HAS TO BE ORDERED SEPERATE FROM SPEED SENSOR AS THERE ARE THREE DIFFERENT ONES FOR THIS TRUCK WITH DIFFERENT # OF TEETH ON GEAR. wHEN I DO GET new speed sensor still not sure if this will fix speedometer. Do you know if computer needs to be reprogrammed? Any further advice would help.

Guess I finally have speedometer fixed. Put in new speed sensor & it still didn't fix problem. Took out speedometer from dash & disconnected wire plugs from back of printed circuit. Found nothing burnt & replugged in wiring & took it for a drive. Seems to work OK for now. Will need to drive more to see if speedometer continues to work. Might be that unhooking wire plug from back of speedometer reprogrammed system. Keeping my fingers crossed!
