Odd Electrical Problem

I have a problem with my 89 Jeep Cherokee, It's my right turn signal. The left one works normally. But, my right does not.

When I turn on my headlights at night the right turn signal indicator will glow a dim green. Sometimes it will glow bright green like it is stuck on, other times it will work fine and just go back to a dim green after the signal clicks off, no lights are burned out.

Is it a short? If so, where should I look?

Sounds like a bad ground to me. You will need to get a good shop manual with wire diagams and ground point maps and check them.

I did a double take when I read your post - my 88 has the same exact symptoms. I was goint to try to check the headlight switch and turn signal switch.
If you find anything out, let me know.

www.autozone.com probably has wiring diagrams for your year model in their repair guides if you don't have a repair manual.

Replace the bulb on that side they can have internal shorts from the running filament to the brake filament. Check for bad socket (shorting). Check ground too.

MY '87 DOES THE SAME THING!!!! I thought I was the only one. :-) I've tried new bulbs...nothing...so maybe if we all put our heads together...;-) Let me know what you come up with! :-)

I have a later model (97) so I can't look for you...but I was a mechanic from 1973 to 1996...and in the "old" days sometimes the bulb will get displaced in the instrument pack or the shield for the bulb gets melted.
Or it could be design issues with the instrument board. Could also be a circuit issue, If it does no harm leave it alone. Circuit board melt sometimes also. Or rubs again something.

So if you are intent on fixing it, I would look at the instrument pack first and then diagrams. Take the pack out to look. For diagrams check for a common connection with the head light circuit. Actually the instrument pack back lighting is supposed to be on with the head lights. There might be a "diode" out or one was not designed in the circuit at the time. Talk to some old Jeep dealership techs if you can. I do this as a hobby so I might look at some diagams when I have a chance.

Same problem on my 88 but that is the least of my worries, as someone else pointed out it is probably a ground problem. check all of the bulbs first since that is the easiest to fix. Sometimes mine works fine and othertimes I have the glow in the turn signal indicator

My 94 also did the same thing, it was the wiring going to the bulb that was screwing everything up to the point that my right blinker didn't work so I was forced to get it fixed. I also had wiring for off road lights that was done half a$$ before I got my truck that had to be removed. cost me $300 bucks to get it all straight but i've never had a problem since so if you bring it to a shop that specializes in electrical repairs they'll be able to fix it quickly if not try and re-do the wiring to the side thats having the problem. this must be a typical thing because mine was doing the EXACT same thing as all of yours

I inspected the socket, and replaced the bulb but no change. I wonder if there are any old dealer service bulletins on this ? I'm going to look around the web and do some searches...it's a longshot but maybe.
