What are the pros and cons of this oil? What is the best for a 1996 JGC?

Pro---

-Better stability in high heat situations.
-better lubrication on cold startup- even in summer
-Usually a better quality additive package is used with synthetic oil
-possible improvement in fuel mileage
-can usually extend the oil change interval slightly if you change the filter at the half way point.

-cooler running gear train (manual/auto transmissions, differentials, transfer cases.) use only compatible oils!!.

Con --

-higher price :crying:
-some tend to neglect the oil change end of things because of the extended OCI claims.
-some of the benefits won't be noticable unless you keep the vehicle for a long time
-"synthetic" on the container label now does not mean the same as it did a few years ago. :shakehead

A good place to look for oil info of all kinds is

I use synthetic where ever I can justify the cost. right now I have Mobil1 5w/30 engine oil, amsoil ATF in the transfer case, and mobil1 75w90 gear oil in the diffs. The mopar ATF+4 is also a synthetic but I don't know the extent.

I used to work changing oil, a pit monkey then a #2 manager.

If you use reg oil change your oil every 2G and don't use Pens, it will eat your gaskets and your engine CAN not allways leak oil from every gasket from the oil plug to the valve covers, if your die hard Pens then use the synthetic, it's better.

I use Valvoline Synthetic in my power steering and Mobol in my engine and redline in the diffs and B&M syn Trick shift in my trans and trans case, I also use Synthetic coolent with redline wetter water. I'm also thinking on useing a B&M super cooler because the motor head in me just hates anything temp hot.

I just hate the feeling of sitting in heavy traffic with a engine ruinng 200+ because the oil is allways higher around 50+ higher.

I still change my syn around 2G, if I go over 2G its OK I just plan around that number.

Its like this, if you worrie about over heating and starting your engine in 98 weather or even 10 get syn.

When I gort my ZJ 5.9 I changed the oil with a blend, then the next time I went to syn, I didnt have to do that, but I figured a slow change was better then am all out change.

By the way I could feel the differance when I changed my trans case to B&M trick shift syn.

It's kinda funny to think that somebody would take the advice of a stranger off the net and put anything other then power steering fluid in the power steering. When I talked about useing SYN in the power steering I thought that most people would think I was talking about SNY power steering fluid, not engine oil or boat grease or even Diff oil, all made by Valvoline.

The Valvoline I was talking about is Valvoline "SYN POWER" Power steering fluid. I bought it at a "Advance Auto" it was the only brand they had of SYN power steering fluid. Auto Zone did not have such a beast and asking some of those people what they have only angers me, I used to sell parts and I didnt know everything but I made it my mission to learn everything I could.

I have not added it yet because I'm going to add a cooler I got on Ebay to the power steering, it's a factory 4.0 GC trans cooler that gos on the driver side, I orignaly bouight it with another one and was lucky to get a V8 and a I6 cooler so that I may do the "Scott Mueller" mod. I'm holding out for the right day with good weather so that I can drain the whole system, work the new fluid into the steering box and lines, flush that then refill the whole system.

Hope this clears things up.
