Headlights, taillights, interior lights ect dim when my bass hits, was told best thing to do would be to replace alternator and get a better battery, so..What amp alternator should I get? and what would be the best battery to get? car is a 99 civic lx. I Have 2 audiobahn 12's with a JL audio 500/1 amp, plus undercar neons and lots of accessories. Also, anyone know what the stock alternator is? Heard it was like 70, but that seems high.

I think civics have a 60 amp alternator, maybe 70. I know the teg one is a little higher, like 80 or 90.

At any rate, get a high output alternator. You are pulling too many amps from the system for the current stock unit. Something like a cap is just a cover up, ti won't produce any more amp current, so you still won't be putting out enough. You need a high output alternaot, so whoever told you to get one was correct.

Ohio Generator makes good ones, and they are completly new units, not just re-packed coils or units using re-man parts. However, a good qaulity one like this is expensive, but they wil last. DO NOT go cheap on an alternator. Pay now or pay later. You don't want to go cheap on something important like this. They make them as a complete bolt on, up to a 160 ampre rate/180 hot rate. That's the biggest output they can fit in an oem sized alternator housing (whihc is needed to make it bolt on). It uses no brackets, nothing, it bolts directly on.
However, you will need to run a new charge wire from thealternator to the battery . The stock 8 gauge is to small. Use 4 gauge wiring for this alternator, as per what Ohio Gen says. Also, the pully is slightly smaller, as to create a higher output @ ideal. You'll probably need a smaller belt. No biggie, measure with a string to figure out the length needed for the new belt.

A high output alternator should be fine, as long as your battery is in good shape. However, make SURE your battery is at full charge before you install the new alternator. If you have any more questions let me know.

:iagree:

Don't buy from Schucks or Kragen or whatever else that company is called in different areas. They have at least a 40% failure rate. An alternator on a Civic isn't something you want to do often.
