okay, so i've been thinking about doing the b16 swap for my car. your probably tired of hearing about this from everyone with a hatch. But anywho. Instead of spending the overal (this is an estimate) 1900 dollars for the online complete swap, i was thinking about doing it half junk yard and half online. "what do you mean americansk8er85?" thats probably what your thinking right now. Hows about i break it down. So i buy the engine only online, roughly 700. Now, the local junk yard sells trannies for 50 bucks. And as a matter of fact there are a plethora of Ls transmissions just sitting there waiting to be pulled. In the interest of money, would i be saving good amount. maybe with the money i save i could buy a decent clutch. Perhaps...::sigh::

umm...I say you just get the B18 with the tranny. Then just get you a B16 head online.

B16 with an LS tranny, you might as well stick with the SOHC.

Whatever SiZ. I have a ls trans right now and it doesnt slow it down that bad, and its great on the highway too.

you are looking in the wrong places if you came up with 1900 for the swap. totaljdm has em for 1300 shipped. which includes EVERYTHING you need including instructions. they are very good too. ive bought and installed 2 engines from em and they were great. just my 2cents

Save alot more if you go complete junk yard. Where do you think the places online get the motors they sell?

if you run the ls tranny with the b16, your going to have a hard time getting into vtec.....the ls gears are much longer, Ive been there, you finnaly hit vtec at around 6500 rpm.....then you shift into 2nd, and you loose it because of the torque the ls engine is designed for.
Your better to just buy a whole LS engine and build it slightly, or build an LSVtec by buying a head online.

i think your right about this one, and even tho its more work for ls vetec, in the end i may come out spending just as much while having a faster engine

man that makes not sense
Vtec is engaged at a RPM and the transmission has nothing to do with that.

He is just saying the geering on the ls trans is longer so when you shift to the next gear the rpms will have fallen out of vtec.

VTEC at 6,500! Can't boost a VTEC either!
Just spend the money and get the B16 tranny. There's no use cheaping out on the tranny, then spending more money on go-fast parts just so you can catch up with a person running a DOHC VTEC tranny.

the thing about not being able to stay in vtec is stupid i thought these motors revved to 8 or 9k so if you want vtec just dont shift at 6.5k. so if you can get a tranny for 50 bucks i say go for it

they redline at 8200rpm, but your max powerband its at 7600 I think.....so there would be no point reving to 8200 rpm.
Why do you think HP ratings always list the RPM
for example the b16 should be : bhp160@7600 rpm

The point of reving it to 8K+ is so when you shift, you don't drop as low in the powerband.
As a general rule, I shift at 8.

axels:
no pic, sorry. but i can tell you they are good up to 300hp.
of course it isn't HASport stuff, it's not the price of HASport. haters need not apply. if somebody out there is looking for a deal like the one i mentioned, let me know...i figured it couldn't hurt to mention what was found.

How many of you guys acutally have experience with a b16 mated to a ls trans? Mines pulls great and I dont call out of vtec either. I do engage at 4500 though and I havent had any problems with it at all. I had my car at school today and took 2 of my friends for a ride and they were both very impressed, the one being a trash talking VW owner and even he admited my car would walk all over his modded 1.8t.

Hybrid, just curious what rpm do you shift at not to fall out of vtec?

As a general rule, I shift at 8.
revving higher also poses another advantage...the wheels spin faster, therefore you have better acceleration whether you're making power up there or not...only advantage to the vtec engines IMO...no flaming please.
BTW: a B16 w/ an LS tranny has got to be one of the worst setups ever. it'd be only as fast as a sohc vtec w/ an Si tranny at best...the b16 just lacks the torque to pull itself through gears with the ls tranny.
On the good side...have fun being able to do 160 MPH w/ that setup!
