Shift Knob Removal

I have a 2001 Cavalier with manual transmission, and I was looking into getting a shorter shifter. I've done everything I can think of to remove the shift-knob, but I can't seem to get it off. Is there a trick to it? Can you even remove it at all? I took out the center console, and I tried removing that pin or whatever in the back of the mechanism, but no luck. Help would be much appreciated, thank you.

flat head screw driver. Pry that little clip out. Only way, unless you want to buy a whole new shifter itself.

Yeah man, I worded that incorrectly. I did remove the pin, but still had no luck removing it. I pulled as hard as I could, tried wiggling it and everything; it wasn't going to budge. I took it by a transmission place and the guy told me it didnt come off, that I'd have to replace the entire thing if I wanted to change it, not just the end or whatever.

that guy is on crack... it comes off. keep pullin or get a hammer and whack on it from under neath. I've put a new one on a 96 and 02 cav. both manuals.

Are you talking about the entire piece, with the ball and everything? I'm talking about just the knob on the end (one that could be replaced with a 40-50 dollar after-market shifter that you'd find at advance auto parts or your local motorsports store). If you're saying the knob on the end comes off, I'm amazed, cuz I was certain it wouldnt move even once I removed the pin.

Just pull out the pin and the shift knob will slide off.
