I been looking for an SS from 81-86 because I like the body style they have. I really dont notice that much of a difference in the exterior but I want to know which year would make a good drag car. I found an 85 with 208,XXX mile with a perfect body and interior just begging for a new engine and tranny so it can be taken to the drag strip. The guy wants $3000 for it and I just want to find out some more about the car b4 I make a purchase. Thnx for any info ahead of time. :icon16:

As far as I know the Monte Carlo SS was produced from 1983 to 1988, not 1981.

I'm looking for an 80's Monte Carlo SS too, because I Crashed my '97 Honda Del Sol, & That is the LEAST Crash-Worthy Plastic Shitbox of All time...Looks like a Honda S2000 Had Sex with a Mazda Miata & a Muppet...But I Hurt Myself really bad & Lost my license since August 19, 2003 till May 25, 2005 & My Insurance is fucking retarted...cuz i'm Technicall still under 20 till September 5th. but I want a Monte Because it's a BIIIIG Car...& SUV's Scare the balls off me cuz my first car was an 89 Ford Bronco II & I Brought that shit up on 2 Wheels More than once...& I've had other bad experiences w/ Pickups...I Got stuck in a Mall Parking Garage in my Cousin's Black '91 F-350...but I Wanted something big this run, & My Father's 1955 Chevrolet Bel Air 4-Door (Restored to Bone-Stock-Original Condition, even has the Blue Flame Strait-Six engine, Huge Mickey Mouse Gangster White Wall Bias-Ply Tires, Non-Power Drum Brakes, No Power Steeing, a 2-Speed Powerglide Auto Tranny...etc...) & The closest I can Afford to that is an 83-88 El Camino SS, or Maybe an Iroc-Z28, them are pretty big. I Found one @ a Whole in the Wall Car Dealership on Rt. 20 in Shrewsbury, MA for $1,750... It's got 145,000+ Miles on it, and It needs a bit of work (So I'll offer him an Even Grand for it; Take it home, Put it on Ramps, Sandblast the Undercarrige/Frame, Change the Valve Covers to Tall Chrome ones, Air Cleaner to a Tall One w/ the chevy Bow Tie on it...etc) It had an Automatic Transmission, & 2 Shifters Not multi-shifters like a Hurst Lightening Rods Shifter, one auto shifter on the floor & one on the Steering Column...I'm going to have it Converted from Column-Shift to a B&M Megashifter on the Floor...then it Gets 4 Centerline Auto Drag II Wheels, brand new BF Goodrich Tires, Black Leather Seat Covers/"Racing" Bucket Seats (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=7982732304&category=33701), Then it's going to a body shop to get all re-done & Painted like a Royal Blue...Gabriel Hi Jacker Air Shocks in back, Brake Lines...u know...

Proof of what????? Neither one of those cars is an SS.
As I said earlier, the Monte Carlo SS was made from 70-71, 83-88, and 2000-present, that is fact.
Monte Carlos were produced from 1970-1988 and 1995-present but the SS option was not available from 72-82 and 95-99.
So the cars in the links and the one that your friend has are NOT SS's because the option was not offered in those years.
Yeah......obviously I'm the dilweed.

The SS option was not offered from 95-99. What you have is 96 Z34 that someone had put SS badges or stickers on.....it did not leave the factory that way.

K15004X4 is correct. Anybody can go to the dealer, or even online and purchase decals to turn their car into something else. With the amount of aftermarket body panels and modifications available, you can reproduce almost anything you want. I see it all the time. I have owned many Montes over the years and have done a lot of research into them, and the SS was made from 1970 to 1971, 1983 to 1988, and finally 2000 to present. If you have time, look through some GM history books that are out there and check out the facts right from GM.
