Scanning for Transmission Error Codes?

Hi, my 97 Taurus does not shift into overdrive but shifts through the other gears just fine. I have read that a common problem is a clip in the valve body breaking and preventing the spool valve from moving. I just called a local transmission place and they said a more common problem was a bad speed sensor and that for 70 dollars they can do an "electrical check". Is this “electrical check” just scanning with a OBD II scanner. If so I have a friend with one who can scan it for me. Also does scanning with the connector under the steering wheel give the transmission codes or is there another plug that has to be used.

I just had Auto Zone scan my 98 Taurus. It was idling rough and felt like it was going to die out. The code came up P1744-Torque converter clutch system mechanically stuck in off position. So, if your friend has one of those scanners, make sure it is a full diagnostic scanner. There are a few different models of them and some do not perform full system scans.

That just saved me 99 bucks at the dealer! well worth it. If you don't have a Chilton's manual, I'd be happy to look up any codes that come up for you.
