Blower problem with 97 escort

I had my car broken into, they pulled out my cd player, also took the ac/heat condensor. I recently put one in from the junk yard. Now my problem is that the blower doesn't work in all selection. It's seems to only work on high and when it is on it blows out the defroster more and not out the vents. Can anyone tell me why, did I put it in wrong? I was reading the posts and my problem sounds like maybe the resistor but wanted to run this by all of you to see what you all thought before I started to mess with things. Thanks.

under the glove compartement, you'll find the blower's rheostat. It's a grey cylinder with 5 wires. Check for damage on the wire. If they are ok then it's probably the resistor. To access them open the glove compartement unmount the blower fan. For the problem of the air flow more on the defroter than the panel vent...it's more delicate... It can be moisture your problem. Or the selector that do not oper properly. to check on it you have to unistall the dash (i think. never done it) If someone know something less radical let me know
