2001 ranger abs light

I just replaced my rotors, bearings, pads and rear shoes and the ABS light is now on. It only comes on after the truck starts moving, not in park. I bled the brakes and topped of the fluid also. Everything seems to be working fine. Any ideas?

heck to be sure there is no dirt or rust between the sensor and the tone ring. If it is built up with debris, the sensor can not read correctly. Also check the air gap. Should be approximately .040 inch.

another possibile problem is you could have pushed dirt from caliper into abs valve. you are supposed to open bleeder before compressing piston. did you do that?

Yeah, I opened the bleeder. I'm going to check the sensor for debris. If the gap is off however, how do you adjust it? Is it something that would be in a shop manual?

Procedure will be in the manual. You may be able to remove the sensor and clean mounting surface. If sensor or tone ring are bent, they need to be replaced. The sensor especially, if it is bent and yoy try to bend it back, usually breaks. The tone ring can be straightened enough to work.

The gap between the sensor and the ring on both sides is about a 1/4 of an inch. A little more then .040 of an inch! Any way to adjust it? Any recommendations on a service manual? I looked at a Haynes today, but it does not give any specs or info on servicing the ABS sensors.

If it were me, I would find a scanner capable of reading the ABS system and compare the speed sensors. Or you can disconnect the wiring, install a digital voltmeter set on AC voltage and compare the voltages of each sensor as the wheels are turning at the same speed. Don't forget the one on top of the rear end housing also. I looked for gap on front sensors and the manual did not show a gap measurement. Just to check the AC voltage or use a scan tool to read the speed of the sensors. One of them will probably be way off from the other two. I know this did not answer the question you had, but it is a way to check the sensors. Good luck and let us know the results.

Did you ever figure out what happened and caused your ABS to fail? I just changed my rotors, bearings, and pads as well. Same thing happened. ABS light comes on when i start driving. I did not open the bleeder however. But i doubt that this is the issue. Did you ever fix your problem? If so, what did you do?
