first question, when adding a sub to a cars audio system, what is more important...a good amp or a good woofer? i know that in a perfect world you should have both, but i don't want a mind blowing system, just a setup to get me the greatest frequency response while minimizing cost.
I already have a good sub for a good price...12W3V2-D4. i know the majority of my money went to purchasing the JL audio name but with this being my first system i wanted to try to get it right the first time.
now comes the amplifier. 300x1 @ 2 ohms is what i was told to look for or 600x2 @ 4 ohms, which is bridgable down to what i need. help me please...if any additional information is needed just tell me and i'll get it to you.

If you have a single 12w3v2-D4, you need to look into an amplifier that does 300rms @2ohms, nothing else really. What's you budget?

to expound on my earlier post, good usually follows expense. since i have a good subwoofer, i was wondering if i could look to spend less on the amp, if thats a good idea. for 300x1 @ 2 ohms i would love to spend less than 200 shipped to my door. if that is reasonable.
thanks for your help in advance.

you need both, not nesicarily a "good" amp but one that gives a fair ammount of power, most "good" woofers arent the most efficent. however, too bad you already purchased the W3V2, there are superior products for similar prices, compareable woofers just went on a special sale for around 100 each...
what i never liked about the w3v2 is that it has the strenght and power handleing for JL to give it a cast basket yet they use a stamped basket...oh well, it is a good product none the less.
as for 300w@2ohm
Phoenix Gold Xenon 400.1 wih some head room, 400w RMS 1-4ohm

189 +S&H so just a tad over 200

Some inexpensive brands to look into are Profile, Hifonics, Phoenix Gold lower line, etc, etc.
Just look at the amp's RMS power, look for around 300rms @2ohm and you're set.

My advice, Go Profile, dang cheap for the wattage.

if they're underpowered...i have 100 watts of headroom. kenwood being shitty with no reason in particular leaves me no reason to spend more money on a college budget.

Lower build quality, less reliability, inferior product period.
