attatched to the underside of the hood i have this stuff i cant even say what its called but it looks like insulation and it looks like its been there since it was driven off the lot in 91..i was wondering if anyone had this and if its ok to just rip it all off and have nothing separating the engine compartment from the hood..i want to get rid of it cuz it looks nasty and is kinda falling apart so would it be bad to have nothing separating the hood and the engine? thanks

Its purpose is to keep the heat off the hood so the paint doesnt bubble. I removed mine after an IC pipe blew off at 20+ psi and sredded the thing. I saw no side effects, but that doesnt mean you wont.

I have the same thing, it's all ratty and torn up. Is it possible to find an exact replacement? I know it's not a mechanical "part" of the car, but do you think someone sells a replacement for that?

I'm sure the dealer sells it, of course you'd be paying out your a#$ for it. Try the junkyards, i'm sure you can find a good one somewhere.

i've heard of a lot of people taking it off and nothing bad happened.

Don't have it on mine. No problems other than my hood gets really hot... to the point where a few nights ago, when me and a friend in his older MR2 were doing some doughnuts and crap in the rain in this parking lot. It was about 60-65 degrees outside and raining fairly hard and by the time we left the parking lot and drove the 3 blocks to my friend's house, my hood was bone dry and warm.

Do you think it would be any worse for the paint if the insulation was gone, car in the sun, and the paint is black?

i have it and mines all riped apart because of blown ic hoses... it keeps the heat off the hood because after a while it will start to oxidize the paint or even cause it to bubble under extreme measures.
i have left mine on and my paint is oxidizeing where the upper intake plenteum is... so no telling what it would do without. but i live in texas... so i go thru hot hot weather... if you like in a cool climate then you'll be ok.

Mine is black and I can't notice any real differance now from when I bought it 3 years ago. Then again, mine is always garaged and the only time it sits in the sun is in parking lots and stuff plus it rarely gets real hot (above 90) here. Honestly, I don't think you'd have any real problem. And having it off would probably be better for your car than having it on and in shreds with shit hanging and falling all over the engine.

I have a carbon fiber hood. No heat shield, doing fine.

NO heat shield and no problem. It was removed long before I got the car.

thats my point, no need for one with carbon fiber ;)
