Steering "Klunk"

Anybody aware of a problem with the steering shaft on 2003 Yukon XL's?

Recently, I've noticed a "klunk" when turning at slow speeds. You feel it more than hear it. Sounds like something is loose.

Probably is the shaft. Around brake pedal area and through firewall. They are very aware of this problem. Takes about 20 minutes to replace.

Is there a TSB I need to refer the dealer to or should they know what I'm referring to?

I don't know about cost, but they replaced mine shortly after the warranty was out. You may have to talk to the service manager to get it accomplished, but it is worth the time you spend haggling over it.
If you are close to the 36k, they probably won't give you much of a problem, I was at almost 37k. If you are far away, they will probably make you pay. Ask him to fix it for "goodwill".
Look at the other GM forums (Tahoe, Avalanche, etc.) and you will see other problems like this too. They called it a steering shaft at my dealership.

I don't know about replacing inter. steering shaft. I got my inter. steering shaft removed and replaced on my '03 yukon 8 months ago. The darn clunking is back again. So whats the deal, the inter. shaft has to be greased up at least once a year...cause the one in my yukon is practically new. That sucks....

Did you ask gmpartsdirect.com if they would ship outside the country?

If not, contact them here: [email protected]

They will ship to my location; but, there seems to be a problem with their on line ordering. I was just wondering if there was an alternate site out there for me to order from gmpartsdirect?

Yes. And '05 and '06. They never redesigned it.

Me too. A just noticeable noise only at slow speed in parking lots when rolling over a slight bump, like a tar seam. I have a 2004 Suburban. The warranty was expiring so I took it to the dealer last fall. He showed me a small section of a sample steering shaft that was manufactured with splines in it. His explanation was that the lubricant (grease) migrated out of the assembly leaving it noisy but not effecting it's functionality or safety. His repair: Lubricate it with a "New" grease that is heavier and will stay put????? It was fixed. But most of these posts indicate that the shaft was replaced. If the grease story is true, and it may be, the shaft replacements (if old grease is used) will result in a reoccurrance. Either way I think it is likely to happen again. A zirc grease nipple in the shaft, sleeved coupling would be good.
Cheers

Just got the latest scoop on the steering shaft. The clunking noise is a problem with the intermediate shaft. GM used to just replace the shafts with another shaft and after a while it too would have the same problem. Most recently instead of replacing the shafts they would just lube them up. Mine was done back in Nov of 06 and it is still Ok. I just heard that GM has come out with a fix for the shaft, but it isn't ready quite yet. It should be released in the next few months. In the mean time just have your dealership lube the intermediate shaft and that should hold you over until a more permanent fix.
