Ah...no start and complete dying '01 XJ

Ok, I've read through everything I could find regarding the ubiquitious no start problem with XJ's. However, I still have a few questions because my problem seems just a bit different that the standard issue.
First, the xj will not start without a serious bit of assistance from the gas pedal. I basically have to put the pedal to the floor to get it to start. The engine tries and tries to turn over but to no avail. I do not think this is an electrical issue. I've tested the battery and the lights, wipers, etc. all run fine when the key is in the on position. So much for the simple repairs. Secondly, once the engine is running if I take my foot off the gas, it dies. Not much to say about that other that I'm lead to believe that the problem is either fuel flow or a mixture issue. By the way, no lights on the dash indicate a problem.
I've read much about the CPS problem. Do my symptoms seem in line with a CPS failure? Fuel injectors, filter, pump? Manifold gasket?
Currently, my xj is in the shop and I'm expecting a call any minute. ANY help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks Dave for the quick reply. The technician diagnosed the following:
1. weak battery
2. corrosion on the terminals
Thought I checked for those two! Apparently, I should have tested the voltage at the terminals, not the battery posts (which showed just a bit under 12 volts - which I figured was close enough). Lesson learned. He also added some anti-corosion goop to the connections - looks like grape jelly.
3. way dirty throttle body.
He performed a 3 step fuel system cleaning. I could see where he attached a pressure gauge to the test port, so he was thinking along the same lines.
I went over the engine as best I could the night before looking and testing for the obvious. I guess you live and learn. Hopefully, this will take care of the problem.
BTW, I have about 47K on the odometer.
