Buying a 2000 Ranger, need tips

I'm looking to buy a 2000 Ranger, 4.0L engine, automatic transmission, with about 35,000 miles on it. I have very little experience with cars/trucks and am looking for any tips on what I should be looking for when I drive this vehicle again as well as specific things I should make sure the mechanic looks at when I take it into a shop for a pre-purchase inspection. I'm looking for general as well as specific problems that are common in Rangers.

I noticed the serpentine belt appeared to look like it was a little frayed, small bits of a fabric like material making it look kind of 'fuzzy', but the belt didn't look like it was cracked.

I have driven it once and I did not notice any sounds or erratic behavior and thought it ran very nicely.

The current owner says he hasn't done anything other than had the oil changed regularly and aligned the front end since he's owned it (1 year and 15,000 miles). Other than the air filter and fuel filter being up for maintenance are there are any other things that I need to be expecting will need service in the near future? I read on another thread something about the u-joint needing to be lubricated regularly because it wasn't designed to hold grease well....

Any suggestions or advice appreciated. Thanks.
