Intermitent Start Problem

Hey guys. I have a 91 geo metro, automatic. i have an intermitent start problem. the car, 90% of the time cranks over normally. but after i drive somewhere in town (regardless of engine temperature), i'll turn the key and NOTHING will happen. after a matter of time (either ten seconds or one time it took all night) it will crank over. battery cables and connections are clean and tight, battery is new and charged, starter is fine (we pulled it out of car and bench tested it, it operated fine). any ideas? it is uneasy to know that at any random time it may not start. thanks in advance!!!

I have a brother-inlaw who is a mechanic, my 1992 does the same thing . Anyway he tells me I have a dead spot in my starter and part of the time the starter stops at this spot. I figure I will have to replace the starter to fix it properly.

might check neutral safety switch on the tranny, try starting it in N position and see if it does same thing

thanks guys....neutral safety switch is fine, it doesn't matter what gear it is in. my automotive teacher told me that that starter may have locked up like mentioned. we took starter off and operated it then put it back and it operated. thanks guys i'll figure it out hopefully
