99 XLS Instrument dash light

I have a light out at the top of the speedometer. I have a crescent shaped dark area-which tells me one of the lamps has failed. Looking at the instructions it seems to tell me I must drop the steering column, and half dismantle the dash to get at it. Unless there is an easier way to do it, I'm going to live with the dark area. Suggestions?
