This is a very long post and is mostly just me lamenting my plight. I've been working at getting a car on the road for the better part of 5 months now.
Came across this forum and it has been both my source of inspiration and my mentor at fixing problems as they come along.
I have a 93 cavalier coupe. 2.2 4 cylinder car.
It had sat forever....... when I first tried to fire it up it wouldn't turn over. I replaced the battery and the alternator. Then it fired up but shredded the serpentine belt because the compressor had seized. tried to just bypass the compressor by getting a belt for a car without air but guess what it wouldn't fit. So I tried a couple of things and found that the belt off of a dodge truck 3.0L is the right size to use.
That did the trick at getting it to run. I noticed at this time that the rad was going to need replacing in the near future but I figured that could wait until the weather was nicer since it was winter and very cold. I had to replace a hose right away tho because it was leaking pretty badly.
Then I replaced the spark plugs , wires, oil change, new air filter and drove it with a trip permit for a while. Noticed that there was a smell of gasoline and when I looked at the fuel injectors one was visibly leaking so I replaced it and the fuel filter at the same time. Shortly after that the car wouldn't start so I came to this forum and found the recomendation to clean the IAC valve. Did that (and boy did it need a cleaning) but the car still wouldn't start. That was when I checked the entire fuel delivery system and discovered that the fuel pump was kaput. So I got a new one but when I dropped the gas tank I noticed that there were some suspicious wet spots on it so I replaced the whole tank before it became a huge problem for me.
After that the car seemed to be running great.
But of course nothing is ever as it seems. When I took it in for its emissions test they told me that they weren't getting enough pressure at the exhaust pipe to put it on the machine. As luck would have it though someone had just given me a 91 cavalier 2.2 to use as a parts car so I was able to pull the muffler off of that car since it was only a couple of months old and my car flew past the emissions testing. I put plates on the car and was having a great time. Even if it was short lived. Within a couple of weeks of this the car blew a rod on the highway when my son was driving it.
I thought for sure that this was it for the car but of course that just wasn't the case. First off I had become very attached to this vehicle. It was the first car I have ever worked on and being a 43 year old woman this is no small feat let me tell you. So again I started searching this forum to see about engine swaps. Every one hear seemed really possitive about doing this kind of thing so I figured ...what the hell. Bought an engine hoist and pulled the motor out of the 91. took the head off of it and then pulled the head off of my 93 and put it on the 91 block. I replaced all the gaskets as I went along. Pulled the block out off the 93 and thru it into the trunk of the 91. Then dropped the 91block with the 93 head on it into the 93 cavalier hooked everything up and the car runs . It was a little shaky at first but some people on the forum suggested the egr valve so I pulled it cleaned it and put it back on. it ran much better after that. Oh and I also put the new rad in at the same time.
Now I noticed that the fuel rail is leaking a little at where it connects into the head. I am positive that it is just a problem with the O ring. I've got a replacement O ring but I can't seem to manuver my tools into the spot to get the nut off. This little thing has gotten me feeling defeated. Is there an easy way to get in there? I don't know. Its the section of the fuel rail that connects to the head on the passenger side of the car.

Well I've was raised to believe that nothing is impossible. Of course it took me over a week and a half to complete the job of the engine swap when it would have taken someone else a couple of days. But who knows maybe if I ever have to do this kind of thing again it won't take me as long. :uhoh:
