So my friends and I are screwing around with my car (1999 Ford Escort SE Sport) and we removed my intake (including my MAS and AIT Sensor) and put on a straight pipe with a filter, believe that my car would start and then die. Well it ran, very well actually. So I discovered that my car can run with unrestricted and unmonitored air flow... weird.... :screwy:

Thats great! Are you getting more power out of the setup? Mileage better? Let us know. Dave

lol I freed up alot of power but I'm assuming that it was bad for the engine (as it had no idea how much air was coming in without the mass airflow sensor), despite the fact I had much better gas mileage, but it would stall if I didn't put 10-15% throttle when I wanted to move from a dead stop, so I redid it again.
Now I have the stock plastic crap piping with the holes for the MAS and AIT sensors but instead of having the filter concealed by a series of airboxes I have a cover on it but I had my buddy Steve do some custom cutting on it to allow air to come in on the sides as well as through the top (we cut the top off of the airbox after measuring it up to the filter... very hard to explain). When my girlfriend gets back in town I'll use her digital camera and take a picture. Much easier to see it.
Anyways results from each:
No sensors: much faster, better gas mileage, stalled without adequate throttle
Current rig: somewhat faster, better gas mileage, no stalling
Also I forgot we moved the 6 disc changer from the trunk to rest under my driver's seat... I know it's not wonderful but it works much better for me :grinyes:

Yeah running your car with out sensors, however fun, not good for car. If you can take off the exaust as well and your in for a treat. I took mine of when I put the pacesetter number on and wow was that fun, loud too but well worth it.
Oh and xviciousx your not alone, I moved my 6 disk changer and thought it was wonderful as well.

Oh I know the car runs without exhaust, but as far as intake goes, just screwing around with my buddy's camaro and my other friends WRX... the car starts and then dies immediately without the intake sensors... I know it's bad for the car so that's why I replaced them within a day.
Love the new 6disc location
